Redfish is a deep-water species found at 100--500 m depth over rocky bottom. It is easily recognised by its bright red colouration. Redfish grows extremely slowly and can live over 50 years. Typical catch size is 0.5--3 kg. Due to slow reproduction the stock is vulnerable to overfishing, and responsible harvesting is important.

Frequently asked questions
How deep do you need to fish to catch redfish?
Redfish are typically found at 100--500 m depth, often over rocky bottom. The best catches are made at 150--300 m. You need heavy tackle and preferably an electric reel to fish effectively at these depths.
Why are redfish so slow-growing?
Redfish is one of the slowest-growing fish in Norwegian waters and can live over 50 years. It reaches sexual maturity only at 10--15 years of age. It is therefore important to release small specimens and not take more than needed.
Can you eat redfish?
Yes, redfish has firm, white flesh with a mild flavour that is excellent for cooking. It is popular fried, smoked, and in fish soup. Redfish is a common species in Norwegian food culture.
