Frequently asked questions

When is the best season for cod fishing in Norway?
The skrei season from January to April is the peak season, especially in Lofoten and Vesteralen. Large spawning cod of 5--25 kg are common during this period. Coastal cod can be caught year-round, with good catches also in summer and autumn.
What is the difference between skrei and coastal cod?
Skrei is migratory ocean cod that travels from the Barents Sea to the coast to spawn. It is larger (typically 5--25 kg), has firmer flesh, and is most available January--April. Coastal cod is resident fish living along the coast year-round, typically smaller (1--8 kg).
How much cod can I take home from Norway?
In 2026, tourist anglers aged 12+ may export up to 15 kg of fish from Norway, provided the fish was caught via a registered tourist fishing business. Fish caught outside a registered business cannot be exported. The quota may be used up to two times within 12 months.
What equipment do I need for cod fishing from a boat?
A solid 30--50 lb class boat rod (6--7 ft) with a jigging or multiplier reel is standard. Use braided line (0.25--0.40 mm) and pirk jigs of 200--500 g depending on depth. Bring extra hooks, rubber shads, and natural bait such as shrimp or herring.
